Boost Your Q
Using the FlavrQ Grilling System
How should I ignite FlavrQ Charcoal Chips™? And how long do I need to wait before I start cooking?
Once you have added the correct amount of Charcoal Chips™, as directed, just turn on the gas and ignite your gas grill as you normally would.
Important: Always be sure the lid of your gas grill is fully open before turning on the gas and lighting it. Never use any type of volatile fuel or accelerant such as lighter fluid to ignite Charcoal Chips™. Never ignite or use FlavrQ Charcoal Chips™ anywhere other than on the FlavrQ Grid properly installed in a gas grill.
Unlike traditional charcoal, which requires waiting for visible white ash to form (and harmful toxins or additives to burn off), you can begin grilling right away with all-natural Charcoal Chips™ — as soon as it’s ignited and glowing. However, it’s better to wait a few minutes to allow Charcoal Chips™ to reach the optimal grilling temperature for searing meats and faster cooking. The timing depends on the BTU rate of your gas grill, as well as the distance from the radiant bars to the cooking grate, but our tests reveal that when the FlavrQ Grid is properly installed and Charcoal Chips™ added, most gas grills will typically reach the optimal 400-450° F grilling temperature and be ready for cooking within 3-6 minutes after ignition.
Should I leave my gas grill turned on while using the FlavrQ Grilling System?
Yes, the gas should remain on — because it is your grill's primary heat source.
How hot will my grill get when I use the FlavrQ Grilling System?
Most gas grills will reach 400-450˚F. Some gas grills can reach 700-750˚F. This depends on the amount of BTUs generated by your grill. Charcoal Chips™ will add 75-100° F to your grilling heat level, as well as adding delicious, natural smoky charcoal flavor to your food.
Why do I need to remove the ceramic briquettes or lava rocks from my gas grill when using the FlavrQ Grilling System?
Ceramic briquettes and lava rocks absorb heat, requiring more time to reach grilling temperature. Leaving them in your grill when using the FlavrQ Grid and Charcoal Chips™ is not recommended because it would negate one of the benefits of the FlavrQ Grilling System — more direct and immediate heat to seal and sear moisture inside your food.
Can I use lump charcoal, briquettes, pellets, or wood chips with the FlavrQ Grid?
No. The FlavrQ Grid is designed, engineered, and intended only for use with genuine FlavrQ Charcoal Chips™. Using the FlavrQ Grid in any way not intended according to instructions will void the warranty.
Maintenance & Storage
When and how should I clean the FlavrQ Grid?
Charcoal Chips™ leaves very little ash after burning, so it may not be necessary to clean out the ash after every grilling session — only when you see ash buildup. Never remove ash immediately after grilling or while your grill is still hot. We recommend waiting several hours after you have finished cooking and turned your grill off, before cleaning (e.g., if you used your grill to cook dinner, wait until the next morning to clean up).
Make sure your gas grill is turned off and both the grill and the FlavrQ Grid are absolutely cool before cleaning. Remove any residual ash left on the FlavrQ Grid and clean up any grease or residue using the same type of non-abrasive stainless steel cleaning product you use on the other stainless steel portions of your gas grill.
You may notice some discoloration and minor bending or torque of the FlavrQ Grid over time as it is subjected to high heat grilling. The genuine FlavrQ Grid is made with high-grade stainless steel, so such cosmetic changes will not impede performance when used as intended, according to instructions.
Important: Never clean the FlavrQ Grid at the end of a grilling session or while it is hot. Using any water, liquid, or aerosol cleaner on the FlavrQ Grid while it is hot may result in warping and will void the limited warranty.
Should I remove the FlavrQ Grid from my gas grill when I’m not using Charcoal Chips™?
No, you do not need to remove the FlavrQ Grid. It is designed to act as a heat dispersing radiant system and, as such, creates increased and more evenly dispersed heat.
How should I store FlavrQ Charcoal Chips™? What if it gets wet?
Store Charcoal Chips™ in a clean, dry place, such as in a bin with a tight lid. If your Charcoal Chips™ gets damp, let it dry completely before using it for grilling.
Important: Igniting damp or wet Charcoal Chips™ may result in potentially dangerous sparking.
More About FlavrQ Charcoal Chips™
What is the difference between FlavrQ Charcoal Chips™ and the wood chips I can find in my local supermarket or hardware store?
Charcoal Chips™ is NOT wood chips. Charcoal Chips™ is comprised of specially processed Charcoal Chips™. Using wood chips in your gas grill merely surrounds your food with smoke while it’s cooking. Using Charcoal Chips™ in your gas grill enhances the cooking process. It increases the heat underneath food so it cooks faster, searing and sealing in moisture, while imparting the delicious, natural, smoky flavor you can only get from cooking over charcoal.
Is there sugar or maple flavor in Charcoal Chips™?
No. There is no sugar or maple flavor in Charcoal Chips™. It is made with a blend of wood including sugar maple (a type of maple tree) and birch.
Why is Charcoal Chips™ more environmentally friendly than other charcoal products?
The wood used in FlavrQ Charcoal Chips™ comes only from responsibly managed forests where there is never any “clear cutting.” Charcoal Chips™ has no chemicals or coal content like most lump charcoal and briquettes, and it has less impact on air quality because you’ll use 40-60% less than grilling with traditional charcoal.
Does FlavrQ produce a lot of ash?
Because FlavrQ boosts temperatures by 100° or more, it reduces residual ash by 90% compared to conventional charcoal. The little ash that forms falls onto the FlavrQ Grid and won’t make a mess or clog your burners.
After the FlavrQ Grid has had time to cool (ideally the next day), empty the ash into a metal container and dispose of it. You can use the ash in your garden—it contains nutrients that can help with plant growth!
While it’s not usually necessary, you can clean the FlavrQ Grid with a damp cloth or place it in a dishwasher. You should be able to grill several times before cleaning.
Purchasing & Shipping
Will the FlavrQ Grid fit my gas grill? How do I measure before ordering?
Please measure the area and the height inside your grill before ordering, as follows:
Area: The FlavrQ Grid will fit a gas grill with a minimum inside measurement of 14 ½” in the direction parallel to the radiant bars/heating elements (typically front to back), and an inside measurement of at least 12” perpendicular to the radiant bars/heating elements (typically side to side). Larger grills may accommodate multiple FlavrQ Grids — please measure carefully before ordering.
Height: Measure the distance from the top of the radiant bar/heating element covers to the bottom of the cooking grate. The FlavrQ System should work if this distance is 1 1/4” to from 6”. When installed, the top of your cooking grate should be at least 1 ½” above the top of the FlavrQ Grid.
Important: Never use the FlavrQ Grilling System without the protective radiant bar/heating element covers (triangular or flat) that came as original equipment with your gas grill in place.
Where can I purchase the FlavrQ Grilling System and more Charcoal Chips™?
Currently, FlavrQ products can only be purchased on this website.
At this time, we ship only to addresses in the continental U.S. (not including Alaska or Hawaii).
